Well Balanced Diet among Mothers of Pre-Schooler

ABSTRACT:
A study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of structured teaching programme on knowledge regarding well balanced diet among mothers of pre- schooler. The study aimed to assess knowledge of mothers of pre-schooler on well balanced diet and to evaluate the effectiveness of structured teaching programme on knowledge regarding well balanced diet among mothers of pre- schooler. A Pre-experimental one group pre-test and post-test design was adopted for the present study. The sample for the present study composed of mothers of pre- schooler. A sample of 30 mothers who met the inclusion criteria was selected. Non-probability purposive sampling technique was used to select the samples. A structured interview method was developed for the purpose of data collection in the present study. The respondents knowledge scores was high in the post-test (M=16.1) than that in the pre-test (M=9.03). The obtained mean difference was 7.07. The obtained ‘t’ value, t = 5.38 was highly significant. Hence the null hypothesis is rejected and research hypothesis is accepted. The study findings imply that there is a need for educational programme to create awareness among the mothers of pre schooler regarding well balanced diet.

INTRODUCTION:
“Today’s children are tomorrow’s citizen”. Children are considered to be the back bone of the nation. India has one of the largest populations of the school going children. The children belonging to different socio economic status constitute around 40% of its population majority of them share the socio economic deprivation of their parents, and do not have access to essential requirements of nutrition’s, health care and learning opportunities.
A diet which contains all the nutrients, which contains the various group of food stuff such as energy yielding food, body building food require by a child for the proper maintenance of the health and optimum growth is termed as “Balanced diet”. So that individual is assured of obtaining the requirement of all the nutrients. It is an important that a child’s diet should be both good in quality as well as adequate in quantity. If his diet is deficient in nutrient and energy, it can adversely affect his weight gain and body growth. Child malnutrition is the most widely spread disorder. It is not a simple matter of whether one has satisfied one’s appetite or not since a child who eats enough to satisfy immediate hunger can still be malnourished Malnutrition has been recognized as a consequence of poverty and is known to cause a great deal of both physical and emotional human suffering while it is viewed in the context of violation of child’s human rights.
Malnutrition develops when the body does not get the proper amount of energy (calories), protein, fats, vitamins, minerals and other nutrients required to keep the organs and tissues healthy functioning.
A study to assess the effectiveness of structured teaching programme on knowledge regarding well balanced diet among mothers of pre-schooler at Tarsadi village.
OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY:
1. To assess the effectiveness of structure teaching programme regarding well-balanced diet among mothers of pre-schooler.
2. To assess the knowledge level of mothers of pre-schooler regarding well-balanced diet.
3. To find the association between pre-test knowledge scores and selected demographic variables.
HYPOTHESIS:
H1: The mean post-test knowledge on well balanced diet will be significantly higher than a mean pre-test knowledge among mother of pre-schooler children.
H2: There is significant association between pre test knowledge score regarding well balanced diet among mothers and the selected demographic variables.
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY:
· Research approach – An evaluative research approach
· Research design- Pre experimental one group pretest – posttest design
Variables of the study:
· Independent variable: Structured Teaching Programme
· Dependent variable: knowledge regarding well balanced diet
· Research setting – Tarsadi village, Surat Gujarat
· Population –mothers of pre-schooler who are staying in Tarsadi village
· Sample size – 30
· Sampling technique – Non-probability purposive sampling technique
Tool for data collection:
Tool was divided into 3 parts:
Part –A Socio demographical variables – This part consisted of items for obtaining information about demographic variables such as age of mother, religion, occupation, education, income of family member, no. of working family member, no. of family member, no. of child in home, types of family, food pattern of family.
Part – B structure questionnaires on knowledge of well- balanced diet among mothers of pre-schooler

Testing of hypothesis:
H1: The mean post-test knowledge on well balanced diet will be significantly higher than a mean pre-test knowledge among mother of pre-schooler children.
The above hypothesis was tested using paired ‘t’ test.

Maximum score: = 20 t29 = 2.05, p<0.05
The calculated ‘t’ value (5.38) was significantly higher than the table value (t29=2.05) at 0.05 level of significants which indicates that the structured teaching programme was highly effective improving the knowledge of mother of pre-schooler regarding well-balance diet. Hence the null hypothesis is rejected and research hypothesis is accepted. It can be inferred that the STP was highly effective improving a knowledge score of pre-schooler regarding well-balance diet.

Data presented in Table 5 shows that the chi-square values computed between men pre- test knowledge score regarding well balance and selected demographic variables were not significant at 0.05 levels. Therefore the null hypothesis was rejected and research hypothesis was accepted. Hence it is inferred that there is no significant associated between pre-test knowledge score and demographic variables.
On the basis of the study finding the following recommendation have been made:
The study can be prepared and given to the periphery level workers so that they can impart knowledge to the mothers of pre-schooler.
Education sessions on malnutrition and normal nutrition can be introduced for PHC workers so that they can assess the nutritional states of the pre-schooler.
Regular classes can be conducted for anganwadi workers to refresh their knowledge regarding well balanced diet and encourage them to impart knowledge to mothers of pre- schooler.
